The couple was overjoyed, and both were already beginning to shape the child's future before it was even born. "He'll be a scentist, like me," Hugo would say. "Oh no, she'll be a scientist," would be Jane's response. Though it was harmless at the time, it would eventually take root in both parents as something worse, but their first child, a daughter they named Madison, would have a few years of innocence before that came to pass.
Within a few years Hugo came to the conclusion that, while Maddie was intelligent, she did not have the interest in the type of work her father did. Hugo grew ever frustrated that his five-year-old daughter turned her nose up at his science experiments, preferring more age appropriate things like playing with her dolls and other toys. Of course, someone like Hugo could not see that she was just a child, and it wasn't long before he was demanding they have another one, one that he could do better with. Jane was uncetain of the risk that could come from doing the procedure twice, but Hugo waved his hand. Within a year, she was giving birth to a second daugther, one they named Olivia.
Maddie and Olivia grew close despite their significant age difference. Olivia looked up to her sister, which served to upset Hugo. Though he did not realize it, it was his anger than turned both of his daughters away from him and the field of study he so desperately tried to shove upon them. Maddie began to feel she wasn't good enough or smart enough, and this reflected in her schooling. Once a perfect student, her grades began to decline, but she used her good looks and charm to make her way through. Homecoming queen, prom queen, most popular – all were titles that Maddie could claim, but none of them were good enough.
That feeling led her to rebel. She would stay out late and eventually earned a reputation for sleeping around, all of which drove a further wedge between her and her father. So focused on his daughters and their failures, he could not see that his own wife was suffering the effects of the treatments well over a decade later. As they would eventually discover, Jane had developed ovarian cancer. If they had caught it a few months earlier, chemotherapy might have killed it, but it had already begun to spread to other parts of her body. She had a year, perhaps even less. This devastated Hugo, but he could not see his own fault in the matter. Instead, he chose to blame his daughters, though the treatment to conceive them had been his choice and not theirs.
Madison closed off and refused to accept her mother's fate. Olivia decided she was going to do everything in her power to stop this from happening to others. Just a few months before Maddie turned 16, her mother passed away in her sleep. The family was devastated. Hugo poured himself into his work, leaving the two girls to care for themselves. Maddie became something of a talented chef and housekeeper and was expected to fill her mother's shoes as far as taking care of the home was concerned. From that point forward, she raised her sister; though it was too late for her to turn things around, she constantly told Olivia to follow her dreams and not let her father's negativity sway her as it had Maddie.
When Madison graduated high school a few years later and expressed interest in moving north to Los Angeles, Hugo was furious, claiming her place was in the home and taking care of her sister. "So be it," Madison said, and she took her sister with her. Hugo tried to intervene and get his daughter arrested for child abduction, but because Olivia was old enough to be taken seriously, nothing came of it. Madison was informed that she would need to go through more legal means to make it happen, but her father's neglect put the law on their side.
The daughters said goodbye to their father for one last time, but life without his resources was not as easy as either thought it would be. Madison was forced to work multiple jobs to keep food on the table, but Olivia was never any the wiser to any issues. She was happy to be with her sister, and that was all that mattered. Eventually, while working at a more popular restaurant, a modeling scout caught sight of Madison and asked if she had any interest in modeling. It was never something she had considered before, but if the money was better than what she made waiting tables, she had to try.
At first, it wasn't, but the more Madison worked, the better the jobs were that she was offered. She worked her way up from small advertisements to major magazine spreads and even worked with Victoria's Secret for a time. It was here that she would meet her future husband, an NFL quarterback named Jason Taylor. The two hit it off and were married within a few months of meeting.
Looking back, Maddie regrets ever marrying him. Though things were great at first, he soon showed his true colors and began dictating every move she made. Unlike her father, Madison was actually scared of Jason, so she obliged. When he asked her to lose weight, she did. When he asked her to leave modeling behind to take care of his daughter, she did. When he asked her to leave everything behind and move away to Maui and out of the spotlight, she did (with hesitation). Jason left her on the island while he stayed primarily on the mainland. It was as if he no longer wanted to be around her but wanted the illusion of a happy family. And so Madison remained, stuck in Hawaii and taking care of his young daughter. Olivia eventually joined her.
Ten years later, she is looking for a way out. Kyla, her stepdaughter, is now the rebellious teenager she once was. Jason hardly comes home, but, when he does, he expects it to be as if he had never left. The only positive in her life is her sister, who is finishing up her studies to become a doctor. Madison plays the role of happy housewife, but has long since been training with martial arts, firearms, and various forms of self defense in hopes that she can find a way to get rid of her husband, once and for all.

Miranda Lawson is a human Cerberus Officer. As Jacob Taylor's informant, she gives him guidance and advice during missions, often via hologram. Miranda is very well traveled and has many contacts, extending from Citadel space and the Terminus Systems, to as far as the hostile Nemean Abyss. Her vast network of contacts may be explained by the fact Miranda is a known Cerberus operative, one who still has friends – or at least friends of friends – in the Alliance military.... Read More
